Regenerative Medicine

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine involves delivering specific types of cells or cell products to diseased tissues or organs, where they work to restore tissue and organ function. This can be done through cell-based therapy or by using cell products, such as growth factors. Amniotic tissue injections are an example.

What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are cells in the body that have the potential of becoming any type of cell that is necessary. They can become skin cells, brain cells, organ cells, cartilage cells, in addition to a multitude of other cell types. Therefore, they are ideal of treatment of diseases where cell function has gone awry.

Why Are Stem Cells Used in Regenerative Medicine?

Stem cells are able to regenerate into different types of cells, through a process called differentiation. When stem cells are transferred into a part of the body where tissue is damaged, they begin to make more of that type of cell through differentiation. This process supports  restoration of the tissue. Stem cells are a key component in the advancement of regenerative medicine, as they open the door to new clinical applications.
